The majority of respondents have indicated that their companies support BYOD but are concerned about privacy, according to a survey by Zix Corporation and Ponemon Institute.

The majority of IT and IT specialists say that their companies support BYOD, but they have also indicated that the companies do not use tools or policies to protect corporate data, according to the “BYOD Security: A Fresh Perspective” survey by Zix Corporation, an email encryption provider based in Dallas, Texas, and Ponemon Institute , a privacy, data protection and information security consultancy firm.

About 56% of respondents say their companies are looking to replace current BYOD security solutions. While 46%, out of the 60% who indicated that their companies support BYOD, say that their companies do not use tool or policies to protect corporate data. Additionally, 60% of respondents say employees are concerned about privacy and personal data retention.

“Companies are swiftly adopting BYOD to enable work productivity and create efficiencies but are hitting significant road bumps in cost, security and employee concerns,” says Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of Ponemon Institute. “The evolution of BYOD solutions to overcome these challenges is necessary for full adoption across companies and among entire employee base.”

The survey also shows that 37% of companies only use mobile device password policies. Over 40% of respondents have indicated that their companies have limited BYOD deployment. Reasons include employee resistance to loading security tools on personal devices and inadequate security tools, 35% and 28% respectively.

“As excited as the market is to take advantage of BYOD, it’s clear that there’s a hunger for better solutions,” says Rick Spurr, chairman and CEO of Zix Corporation. “Understanding the current state of BYOD and companies’ goals and concerns will enable the market to develop innovative answers that advance BYOD to its full potential.”

About 895 IT and IT security specialists where surveyed by the Ponemon Institute, based in Traverse City, Miss.
