M&T Bank Plans to Acquire Former HSBC Data Center

The Buffalo-based bank will add as much as 75 jobs in western New York.

M&T Bank Corp. signed a letter of intent to purchase a former HSBC data center in Amherst, N.Y., and will begin converting the building as its primary data center going forward.

The bank will retrofit its current data center, which is also located in Amherst, as additional office space. The move to the new almost-60,000 square foot facility will see M&T bringing 75 new jobs to Amherst.

"At M&T Bank, we're pleased to be working with HSBC on this project to keep the data center generating new investment and jobs in the community," said Mark J. Czarnecki, President of M&T Bank.

M&T currently employs 1,314 people at two operations centers and nine branches in Amherst. It has 84 branch offices across western New York, and is headquartered in Buffalo. It also operates in seven eastern U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada.

"As we've grown in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States, M&T's Western New York employment has more than doubled from 2,400 in 1999 to 5,000 today," said Czarnecki. "This new investment gives us the room we need to expand our technology infrastructure--and the room we need to add more new jobs."

If the purchase goes through, M&T Bank plans to invest more than $105 million in the two buildings over the next 10 years.
