NCR Introduces Free-Standing, Weatherized ATM

Can be trucked around to sporting events, concerts and other outdoor venues.

NCR today introduced what it says is the only free-standing, weatherized and portable self-service ATM. It's designed so it can be moved around to events such as Nascar races, community fundraisers and concerts or within a convenience store or branch.

What's to keep someone from stealing the machine? "The ATM has holes in the bottom to allow the deployer to bolt it to the ground," says spokesperson Jeff Dudash, who corresponded with Bank Systems & Technology via email this morning.

Although we thought we had seen free-standing ATMs outside before, Dudash assures us this is not so. "First, many ATMs are through-the-wall ATMs, so obviously can't be moved at all," he says. "For those that are freestanding, the issue is weather. Lobby ATMs can't withstand the elements. We've built the NCR SelfServ 28 to be a free standing, fully weatherized ATM so that you can deploy it simply by just plugging it in. It is designed to withstand various weather conditions."

The SelfServ 28 can use wired or wireless connectivity, so it requires only a power outlet to operate. It has "self-healing" technology that allows the ATM to make minor repairs without a service call.

NCR says its SelfServ ATMs have been purchased by more than 900 financial institutions in more than 110 countries around the world.
