Syracuse Students Say No to Dimon

In an effort to "Take Back Commencement," a group of Syracuse University students has engaged in the protest of JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon's upcoming speech at the school's commencement ceremony in May.

In an effort to "Take Back Commencement," a group of Syracuse University students has engaged in the protest of JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon's upcoming speech at the school's commencement ceremony in May.

While more than 1,000 have signed an online petition urging Syracuse to reconsider, student newspaper The Daily Orange reports Dimon has not changed his plans to attend the upcoming commencement.

Dimon, chief executive officer of JPMorgan Chase & Co., answered questions regarding SU students' protests in a conference call with a group of reporters Wednesday. The call was originally intended for Dimon to report the company's first-quarter earnings.

"I gather that this was a group of students who made the selection, but I also completely understand that some people may be opposed to it," Dimon told reporters from Bloomberg during the call. "People should stand up for what they believe in. I applaud that some folks there want to stand up for something different."

The students aren't necessarily targeting JP Morgan Chase or Dimon in particular, instead making the protest in part about "the industry Mr. Dimon represents," according to the Bloomberg interview of one of the student protest organizers, embedded below.
