Citi Makes Savvy Use of Facebook to Promote NYC Tweetup

Good example of how banks can benefit from social media.

Citi seems to be keeping its social media IQ high. The bank is holding a Tweetup (a meeting organized through social media sites such as Twitter) this Thursday evening at its new branch on Broadway and 14th Street in New York City and is promoting it savvily on Facebook.

In the invitation Citi posted on Facebook, the bank cheerily messaged, "Hello New York! We've recently opened our New Union Square Flagship branch. We'd like to give the neighborhood a hardy hello by celebrating with Citibank's first ever tweet-up! The event is open to everyone- Citibank customers or not. Check out the new branch, meet the staff, and mingle. The branch features free wifi, so check in on Foursquare; you might just see your name on the big screen! Wine will be served and there will be cheese for nibbling. Hope to see you there! Hashtag for the event will be #CitiUS."

As of this morning, the bank had received 14 RSVPs on its Facebook wall, some enthusiastically embracing the idea of free wine and cheese, others apologetically explaining they had other events, presentations or projects to attend to.

Citi's Facebook voice is breezy and approachable; for instance, in one exchange, a customer asked, "Will there be free money?" and Citi responded, "If by free money, you mean Free Money Masta the lesser known new-wave-synth-with-a-twist-of-brit-pop dj alter ego of one Anna Obrien... then, yes. It can be arranged."

The idea of a bank holding a Tweetup is not new. ING ran several Tweetups in major cities earlier this year. But Citi seems to understand the kind of tone and approach that will resonate with social media users, especially hip New Yorkers.
