Twelve Firms, Including Visa, Join Symbian Foundation Network

The Symbian Foundation, headquartered in London, has added 12 additional companies to its membership, including ARM, CieNET, Flander, FUJISOFT, Huawei, Inmote, InnoPath Software, Red Bend, Scalado, Symsource, TRANGO Virtual Processors and Visa. This brings the number of companies that support the foundation initiative to 52.

The Symbian Foundation is a non-profit founded in June 2008 by Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone. The goal is to establish a "royalty-free open platform and accelerate innovation" with the intent to unite Symbian OS, S60, UIQ and MOAP to create one open mobile software platform.

The Symbian Foundation platform will be available to members under a royalty-free license during first half 2009. The Foundation will provide, manage and unify the platform, ultimately releasing it as open source.
