Huntington Bank to Offer No-Fee Debit Cards

The Ohio-based institution has converted its debit portfolio to MasterCard as part of the upgrade.

Huntington National Bank (Columbus, Ohio, $52 billion in total assets) announced today it is converting its debit card programs to MasterCard and upgrading all its customers to a Platinum Debit MasterCard. Huntington said this card does not entail a fee to use.

The bank said it is committed to offering "fee-free" debit cards for its customers, in lieu of several banks announcing they will begin to institute fees for debit card use.

The conversion of Huntington's debit portfolio to MasterCard will include the nearly 1.5 million consumer and business debit cards issued by the bank. Huntington customers began receiving their new debit cards in early October, with all checking customers expected to have the new cards in hand by Nov. 1.
