SunTrust President & CEO Wells Also Named Chairman

The board of directors of SunTrust Banks announced that James M. Wells III, the company's president and CEO since January 2007, will assume the additional role and title of Chairman of the Board at the SunTrust's annual meeting on April 29, 2008. Wells assumes this role as Phillip Humann, executive chairman of SunTrust since January 2007, will retire after a 40-year career with the company.

As chairman, president and CEO, Wells will retain executive management responsibility for SunTrust's overall business operations and financial performance and continue to serve as chairman of the executive committee of the board.
