Identity Management, Greening Among New CIO Challenges

Some challenges facing today's bank CIOs are traditional issues, including improving relationships with front-office leadership, continuing to industrialize the development life cycle and service delivery, reducing error rates and failed projects, stabilizing and continuing to reduce costs, and improving development and delivery quality. Others, such as proactively protecting the bank through identity and access management technologies, have come to the fore more recently. The greening of the enterprise is among the current hot topics facing CIOs, encompassing reducing IT-driven power consumption and eliminating internal paper through Web-enablement.

The qualities of a bank CIO today should include business management and leadership skills -- required both to run IT as a business and to earn a seat at the top management table. Team building also is important, as today's banking IT is far too complex for the "one great leader" model. And, as always, vision and the ability to innovate, such as identifying and developing/testing new technologies that can improve banks' competitiveness, are as critical as ever.
