Wells Fargo Adds Text Receipt Option at ATMs

The new option adds to the existing ability for customers to receive an e-receipt to their online banking inbox or personal email account.

Wells Fargo this week rolled out another addition to its digital ATM receipts offering, introducing text message receipts at its more than 12,000 ATMs across the country.

The bank already gives customers the option to receive an e-receipt to their online banking inbox or personal email account. They also have the option to select “Print Receipt” or “No Receipt” at the ATM.

According to Alicia Moore, head of Wells Fargo ATM Banking, once the bank started offering e-receipts it knew it wanted to extend the convenience to text messages as well.

"We have many customers who use our text banking service and still others who are active with our Wells Fargo online and mobile banking," Moore told Bank Systems & Technology. "We wanted to be able to extend to them additional options, such as text."

Moore anticipates some of the customer who currently receive e-receipts will switch to the text receipt option, but that the new option it will also attract new users in its own right.

"When we introduced e-receipts, over time we actually saw the number of customers who select the “No Print” option increase," she added. "We attribute that to people using e-receipts and becoming more and more comfortable that they have the information in a secure place, that they then made the decision when it came to certain transactions that they didn’t require a receipt at all. But really, we just want customers to select the option that works best for them, is most convenient and helps them manage their finances the way they want."

Moore also noted that Wells Fargo is always looking at ways to innovate in the ATM channel, including a new interface that was introduced this year. "We also invite our customers to tell us what they’d like to see; at our ATMs we regularly ask customers to email or tweet us about their experience," she added.
