USAA Announces Mobile RDC App for Android Phones

San Antonio, Texas-based USAA announced on Tuesday that it has developed a new application for mobile phones running on the Android operating platform that will enable customers to remotely deposit checks using their phones.

The new remote deposit capture (RDC) capability, named USAA Mobile App for Android, is similar to one that USAA made available to iPhone users last August. Both the Android and iPhone apps allow USAA customers to take a photo of a check with the camera on their mobile device and then electronically submit it for deposit. USAA also provides customers with mobile features around account management and investment management.

USAA's customer-base, members of the U.S. military and their families, has embraced mobile banking capabilities, as their jobs often require them to move around the country and globe. The company reports that 1.2 million of its 7.3 million members access its mobile platforms to conduct financial transactions.

"The popularity of USAA's mobile platform clearly demonstrates that USAA members are comfortable using this technology and welcome the convenience it offers," Jeff Dennes, USAA's executive director of mobile technology, said in a press release.

In the future, USAA plans to extend its mobile offerings, including a possible person-to-person application that will enable banking customers to transfer money to others using their mobile device, the company says. USAA's mobile capabilities have been largely developed in-house by its research and development team. "These tools are being developed by people who understand our culture of service and the unique needs of our customer base," said Dennes.
