I participate in a sport called Platform Tennis. It's a racquet sport that's played outdoors in the winter in northern climates. [Editor's Note: Kelly is based out of Square 1's Boston office.]

The court: It's about 25 percent to 30 percent the size of a tennis court, with the same lines. The court is raised off the ground - that convention was invented so we could get the snow off the courts - and surrounded by about a 10-foot-high, taut chicken-wire fence.

The racquet: It's more of a paddle than what you'd think of as a tennis racquet.

The ball: It's the same size as a tennis ball, but it's very dense rubber. You need something that responds to the temperature - it gets slower as it gets colder; it's too fast to play in the summer.

The players: We've got an active league in and around Boston, with about 14 clubs with 30 guys each. In the upper echelon, the tennis skills are of the pro-tour quality.

The next generation: I've got a seven-week-old baby at home. His great-grandfather was a national [tennis] champion, and his grandmother was nationally ranked as well. He'll get a taste.
