The results of new research by the Federal Reserve show that electronic payments are much more important to the nation's economy than previously thought.
The Fed's study on retail payments shows that electronic payments have increased to 40% of all non-cash payments, a far higher percentage than existing industry estimates.
"Automated clearing house, credit card and debit card payments are all experiencing double-digit growth every year," said Elliott C. McEntee, president and CEO of National Automated Clearing House Association (NACHA). "We are encouraged that initiatives to reduce check use, such as e-checks and electronic bill payment, are succeeding."
