Overview:
Consumer-directed healthcare (CDH), a converging of the financial services and health markets, is anticipated to drive the creation of more than 42 million new accounts and $2.9 billion in annual revenues for financial institutions by 2012. CDH is a still a relatively new, technology-driven offering encompassing both financial services and health. It has shown impressive growth over the past 24 months, with more than $10 billion in acquisitions and more than 150 major financial institutions entering the business. Despite the growing volume of activity – including more than 70 major alliances between financial services organizations such as banks and card processors and health insurance carriers – the field is still changing rapidly, as both insurance companies and financial institutions design and implement strategies. Some organizations that have held back are wondering if they are too late to market, but there is a second wave of consumer-directed healthcare activity emerging, permitting those who take advantage of it to offer more differentiated, efficient, scalable and flexible offerings than those who moved fast using workarounds and patches built from existing systems/processes.
Where are the opportunities and what must financial services firms do to capitalize on the increasing new revenue and accounts potential promised by consumer-driven financial management in healthcare?
