Staying in Front of Change

As anyone involved in the banking technology world knows only too well, change has become a way of life in business.

As anyone involved in the banking technology world knows only too well, change has become a way of life in business. Even the most successful and stable organizations must be on the move and constantly reinvent themselves to anticipate customer needs and stay ahead of the competition. Sometimes we are able to embrace and drive change; sometimes changes are imposed on us or surprise us.

This is by way of introducing some significant changes at Bank Systems & Technology, starting with a new face and name on this page. Readers with very long memories may vaguely remember me as a former BS&T staffer -I was executive editor from 1987 until 1991, when I became editor of sister publication Insurance & Technology. I'm excited to be returning to Bank Systems & Technology as editorial director, and I'm also pleased to introduce managing editor Greg MacSweeney, who has overseen operations at I&T for the past four years.

I'll be taking over from Paul Doocey, who has ably led the publication for the past several years. Paul is leaving the magazine for a new professional opportunity, as is long-time executive editor Steve Marlin, who will be joining the editorial staff of sister publication InformationWeek. Best of luck to both Paul and Steve, and thanks for their contributions over the years.

That's not the only change underway. We are announcing the creation of the InformationWeek Media Network, an alignment of leading brands under InformationWeek, CMP Media's flagship publication. The InformationWeek Media Network consists of two brands that cross industry lines-InformationWeek and Optimize-and five vertically focused business technology publications: Bank Systems & Technology, Insurance & Technology, Wall Street & Technology, Government Enterprise, and the soon-to-be-launched Healthcare Enterprise.

Not only does this new network allow our organization to serve the industry with both broad (horizontal) and targeted (vertical) information channels, it also provides a wealth of resources and capabilities to Bank Systems & Technology in key areas such as research, events and enhanced content. We now have access to an expanded editorial brain trust, into which we will tap to help make BS&T an even stronger resource of best practices and thought-leadership.

"Even stronger" is the key concept here. Bank Systems & Technology, along with the other vertical publications in the InformationWeek Media Network, remains an independent brand focused specifically on the ways in which banks are using technology to drive and support their businesses. We now will be able to build on that mission and deliver to you even more critical and authoritative information.

And, ultimately, it's all about you, the reader. I welcome your questions, feedback, suggestions and criticism, and plan to meet many of you (as well as renew some old acquaintances) soon. At this time of challenge-and opportunity-within the banking industry, Bank Systems & Technology will not only provide you with analysis of ongoing change, but will also be your guide to the changes that inevitably will occur. I look forward to taking that journey with you.
